Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2018, Currey & Company is a manufacturer that values history in many ways. From the company’s beginning selling historic garden furnishings to its current aptitude for producing programming that explores different aspects of the history of the design community, it is a company steeped in a forward-thinking past. Looking back to the company’s history, when Robert B. Currey founded Garden Source Furnishings, the main focus of the company was the creation and marketing of classic garden furniture from the Winterthur Museum and the Smithsonian Institution. These collections were joined by a very American collection of garden whimsies, birdhouses and rustic twig furniture. Some lighting products were among these first offerings and by the early 1990’s the lighting category had become very important. Accordingly, the name of the company was changed to Currey & Company to embrace a new focus on products for the interior and the Currey family is in its second generation at the helm.

Blog History in the Making

Today we are celebrating our 200th post on the blog so we’re looking back at how we have evolved as we explored all things Currey in this small corner of the massive digital world. As we hear from its original author below, there would be no blog if it had not been for Brownlee Currey, who saw how beneficial it would be to tell the company’s story here. It would also be less vibrant without that foundational voice. We’re talking about Suzy Currey, of course, who wrote the first post that went live on April 17, 2013, over eight years ago. We’re sharing it to celebrate our blog history, a chronicle of the evolution of our dynamic company

Celebrating Our Blog History with Suzy Currey

It is quite an honor to have been asked to write the first blog for “& Company.” There is an inside connection: My son, Brownlee, president of Currey & Company, is the one who made this request. With help from the “& Company,” Brownlee is running this business that I aided and abetted Robert Currey in beginning back in the late 1980’s. I was the sole writer and voice for the company for the first twenty years of its existence and it seemed appropriate to Brownlee that I make the first entry here.

The company’s story is one of evolution as well as one of people. It began as a company focused on very proper historic garden furnishings whose seriousness was amusingly enhanced by an entertaining mix of whimsical rustic accessories. And it evolved into a company that excelled in lighting products. Go figure: the “accidental lighting company,” indeed. But all of these products told a story of the work of human hands.

Fast-forward to 2013, and Currey is not only offering lighting and garden furniture, but also interior furniture items from case goods to custom upholstery. While the original eclectic nature of the company was largely inspired by the vision of Robert Currey, the company now relies on many eyes and hands to make its collections a reality.

And that is where the “people” part of the story comes in. It is people, the “& Company” part of our name, that makes Currey & Company what it is today. From designers to sales people to account executives to packing experts, people are what make the company great. Without the design talent and the hard workers in Atlanta and internationally, Currey & Company would not be the company it is now.

The Currey & Company story is all about so many people. There are the shining stars whose vision and hard work shapes the company. And there are the people who contribute daily and consistently to all the necessary arenas of operations. It has been wonderful to see them as they work and achieve the goals that have made Currey & Company what it is today. They are the “& Company.” So get ready to read more here about and from “& Company” folks, as well as hearing plenty about Currey & Company products. We’ve got a lot of good people with good stories to tell.

And we have been faithful in sharing these, monthly for a long while and weekly since March 2019 when we knew we would be seeing less of the members of our design community as the world stood still for a while. We would like to thank Suzy for all she has done to make a very positive impact on our brand and we salute her talent at keeping the message vibrant, not only as it relates to our blog history but in so many other pieces of written materials over the years. Raise a glass to her the next time you pop the cork on some bubbly!
